Kaiti Medical Centre – an innovative, well staffed and equipped eight – Doctor General Medical Practice in Gisborne, New Zealand, is looking for experienced or newly qualified GPs to work on a six or preferably twelve month renewable contract.

Remuneration and professional support is excellent.

Professional standards are high, and we are well supported by and enjoy an excellent relationship with our Specialist Medical and Surgical colleagues at Gisborne Hospital, with whom we are also closely involved in continuing medical education programs.

Gisborne, a small coastal city on the east coast of the North Island, the Mediterranean equivalent at 38 degrees south, is notable for its warm and sunny climate, great wines and the best and most consistent surf in the country.

To the east, The Pacific Ocean, with great surfing, diving and fishing, to the north and west, vast areas of mountainous native forest, the Raukumara State Forest Park, with unrestricted hill walking  and excellent trout fishing.

New Zealand is geologically young, turbulent and mountainous, with widespread volcanism, particularly in the North Island.

There is no other country in the world where such a wide variety of landforms, vegetation and climatic conditions can be found in such a small area.

In a few hours, it is possible, in the South Island to drive from the dense rain forest of the West Coast, across the Southern Alps to the dry grasslands of Central Otago. In the north, from the warm sunny alluvial plain around Gisborne, 2 hours drive through rugged mountainous virgin forest to the fertile rolling farmlands and orchards of the Bay of Plenty; another 3 hours southwest leads to the volcanic plateau, the boiling mudpools and geysers of Rotorua, and the majestic peak of Mt Ruapehu, an active volcano and skifield.

Gisborne has, at 47%, the highest Maori population of any New Zealand city. About 50% of the rest of the population is Pakeha (New Zealanders of European descent) and there are small Asian and Pacific Island communities.

Although most of the population would identify with one of the main racial groups, as there has been, and continues to be, much intermarriage over the years, many share a mixed heritage.

Gisborne is relatively isolated, though air links to main centres are frequent and reliable, and the main highways north and south are of good quality, if a little mountainous. Infrastructure is modern, civic and educational amenities of a high standard, and there are many excellent restaurants and cultural activities.
